Does Flossing Actually Make a Difference to Us? Does flossing help?

After 37 years of being recommended by the federal government, the recommendation for the use of dental floss was removed from their website in 2016. Does flossing help ?

This was explained by the statement that the effectiveness and advantages of using floss have not been researched enough. But the government wasn’t the only institution to have suspicions towards this method of cleaning your teeth. The same year the Associated Press, too, released a report questioning the validity of flossing, one of the most used methods of dental hygiene.

Nevertheless, many organizations and professionals assure that using dental floss still is helpful and it is not worth breaking this habit. Especially as the benefit of the usage of dental floss is questioned merely by the insufficient amount of time invested into conducting research.

So dentists continue to stick to the recommendation and the usage of floss. It has quite some benefits other methods of dental hygiene can’t boast of, such as reducing the probability of gum inflammation etc. But even with just cleaning the spaces between your teeth, flossing remains a very important part of your daily dental routine.

Here is why and what makes it so special:

Reduces Bacteria and Plaque

You have probably already heard that the toothbrush doesn’t reach all parts of the teeth and can’t clean all the plaque. This is where dental floss can help. With its help, it is possible to reduce the plaque which is not reached by the toothbrush. This, in turn, decreases the chance of getting a gum inflammation or other diseases.

So we see that flossing does help us reduce bacteria and plaque as well as avoid different dental infections. And these are not the only benefits by far.

Helps Avoid Gum Disease of Any Kind

There are many different kinds of gum diseases, many of which we haven’t even heard about. And as the toothbrush doesn’t give us the possibility to clean the teeth from all sides, the risk of catching an infection is high. This is where dental floss truly helps us. Using it can prevent early stages of Gingivitis, through what chances of getting problems with your bones or other periodontal diseases are reduced. This is confirmed by the president of the American Academy of Periodontology, Dr Wayne Aldredge. He continues to support the usage of flossing.

Cleans Hard-to-Reach Areas Easily

Although most people are concentrating on cleaning their teeth with toothbrushes, during this procedure only three-fifths of the tooth can be reached and cleaned by the brush. The rest of the surfaces require flossing to get clean.

Alternatives to dental floss such as mini-brushes, tooth pickers or water flossers can be also be used for cleaning those hard-to-reach areas of bacteria, food rests and plaque to minimize the risk of a possible infection.

Prevents Bloody Gums and Infections

One of the problems many people see in using dental floss is that they think it causes bleeding of their gums. But this isn’t quite correct. The bleeding comes either from a too dynamic and not careful usage of the toothbrush, or, more often from a bacterial infection. And as we know, using floss helps to get rid of all the bacteria. So flossing, in fact, does not cause the bleeding of your gums, but rather prevents it as the risk of a bacterial infection is reduced with the usage of either dental floss or one of its alternatives. Combining this with brushing your teeth properly twice a day, you will as good as never suffer from bleeding gums.
